Whether we admit it or not, we have become dependent to gadgets, devices, and machines that makes our life easier, comfortable, and enjoyable. Every aspect of our lives has been integrated by machines that needs a power supply. Some people would even admit to not being able survive a day without a smartphone. But no matter how perfectly uninterruptible we want these power supplies to be, there will be extreme weather cases, accidents, rare occasions, and storms that may cause power outage especially with the kind of climate we have here in the Philippines.
The Philippines in the past may have experienced frequent nation-wide power outage because of El Nino and La Nina but due to the exploration of natural and alternative power sources, the general distribution of power throughout the Philippines has greatly improved and the nation-wide power outages have been reduced to rotating brownouts and local power outage. Nation-wide or not, power outages are capital inconveniences. That is why it is important to know what to do when power outages hit us.
The first step in facing a power outage is to keep an alert mind and prepare for whatever that is coming with the power outage. Check if the problem is just within your home by checking whether your neighbors have power too. If they do, check your main fuse or circuit breaker for any blown fuse.
If replacing the fuses didn’t solve the problem, contact your power supplier immediately to check for power outage or report the incident to have it fixed. Remember to unplug all of your appliances in the duration of power outage to avoid additional damages once the power is restored. UPS or uninterruptible power supply is also advisable to protect your computer from power surges.
3. Determine How Long the Outage Will Take –
Most of the times, power suppliers will give an estimate on how long it will take for power to get restored. The only problem is if the power outage is a result of extreme cases like extreme weather condition or disasters such as flooding and earthquakes, the outage may last for a couple of hours and sometimes even days.
4. Prepare in Advance –
Long-term power outages are almost always unexpected at times so it would be best if you prepare for situations like this. To make power outages bearable, it is advisable to have flashlights, battery-operated radio, candles and matches, extra batteries, power bank for your devices, basic first-aid supply, water and food. Also, take into consideration the condition of your family members specially the infants and the elderly. It will also be wise for businesses to have a backup power source like a standby generator. Just make sure that you have an ample supply of fuel to sustain the generator until the power is restored.
Power outages can be frustrating if not handled correctly but with a plan and the correct mind set, a power outage will appear like just a quick break from the modern life.
